2019 Summer Series

This is event three of the 2019 PNP Road Summer Series.  We will be running five events in the Series, and you can enter one or the whole series, either as an individual or as a team. We have two distances at each event, the Gran Fondo (long course) and the Medio Fondo (medium course). Both will have a mass start with placings awarded based on age and gender categories, and at the end of the ride we'll have a podium for the top place getters with refreshments available. We hope you'll support us by coming along and giving it a go.

Event Three – Mainfreight Rice Mountain Classic

​

Venue: Gladstone Sports Hall, 585 Gladstone Rd, Gladstone 5792. Meet here to register, collect numbers, timing tag and get your briefing. Registrations are open between 8:30-9:30am.

Event date and time: 9 March, 10:00am Gran Fondo start, 10:10am Medio Fondo start.

There are two ride distances, and you are free to choose:

Gran Fondo: 90km (the distance for the Gran Fondo will vary from 80-125km throughout the series)

Medio Fondo: 59km (the distance for the Medio Fondo will vary from 50-80km throughout the series)

Early Start option: Following some really good feedback after round 2 of the PaknSave Summer series we have decided to add an early start option beginning with the  Rice Mountain Classic. Riders wishing to do the full Gran Fondo distance, but would like to have a bit more time up their sleeve, may start 30 min before the main pack (e.g. 9.30am). The Series will provide a lead moto, but you will need to carry own spares. The support car with spare wheels and broom wagon will remain behind the main bunch and can pick you up if have any major mechanical issues. This is a good way to allow the riders to challenge themselves over the full distance and to tag onto suitable bunches as they come through from behind, if at all!

Entry: Online entry  is preferred as it helps us enormously, but you can also enter on the day also for extra $30.

$30 for individual adult PNP member

$20 for individual junior PNP member

$60 for non PNP members (PNP membership is $60 per/annum, so join up now and save. E.g. if not a current member, but join PNP and enter full series, the per event fee for adult is $36)

Team entry for the series is FREE for 2019. (Teams are any number of riders, can be across all grades, genders and distances. Note, only the top 10 placings in each event, by age category).

Note: On-the-day entries incur an additional late entry fee of $30, so enter online now. Close off for normal entries is Thursday midnight to permit organisation of numbers and timing.

Membership and licences:

We will have a list of PNP members on the day, please ensure your race license is also up to date if you intend riding in more than two events in the series. You may also ride without a license.

Event timing: Event timing will be captured using an automated timing system. You will also be issued a number, to allow for manual timing as a back up. Pick up your numbers and timing tags from registration from 8:30am to 9:30am, prior to the event start at 10:00am. Please ensure your number is pinned in the centre of your back so it can been seen at the finish. Return timing tags and race numbers at end of each race for repacking for next time.

Course descriptions: 

Gran Fondo

A challenging hilly course in the back drops of the amazing Wairarapa Countryside. With the right gearing, one of the best hill-challenge courses in New Zealand.

​

Assemble in driveway to sports hall entrance. Neutral to Te Whiti Rd. The event starts with a neutral roll out onto the course as you travel north on Te Whiti Rd.

​

After approximately 8 km, turn right on to Lees Pakaraka Road, and travel north east until you reach Masterton Stronvar Road. Turn right and stay on Masterton Stronvar Road as it kinks to the right around the 25km mark, and turns right again into Westmere Road.

​

Ride south west to the Tupurupuru Te Wharau Road junction and turn left. Note: this is where the Medio and Gran fondo courses split – so make sure you turn left here.

​

Ride south east to the turn-around point in Te Wharau, and then ride back the way to have come. Stay on Tupurupuru Te Wharau Road and ride through to Te Whiti Road, rejoining the Medio Fondo riders as you ride past the Westmere turnoff.

​

Turn left on Te Whiti Road, and ride through Gladstone (approximately 1km) and turn left onto to Admiral Road.

​

Your ride finishes at the top of Admirals Hill climb – after a fabulous (leg busting) 10km!

​

While out on course you will climb Limeworks Hill, Te Wharu-return, Te Kurarau Hill, Admirals Hill.

Medio Fondo

Team competitor rules: 

  1. Register team at start of series.

  2. FREE registration per Team for the Series. However, the Team needs to register the team in the online portal (webscorer) by the nominated Team Leader. There will be a prize money pool for the Series Teams Competition. The more teams entered, the larger the Teams prize pool.

  3. Teams may be any singular or hybrid of club, corporate/workplace, social/your mates, regular cycling teams.

  4. Teams comprise minimum of 4 and no maximum riders across grades and the two Fondo distances. That is, you can have riders in one team in any age-grade across both races. Teams may be single or mixed sex.

  5. Team uniforms are encouraged, but not mandatory.

  6. Riders earn team points based on their finish results in their entered age category. A team with a rich representation across age and sex categories will probably do well.

  7. Points are awarded to top 10 placings per team across both Gran and Medio Fondo by age and sex category.

  8. Riders must be registered into teams at the start of series. Additions permitted as Series progresses. However, to avoid burglars…

  9. …Riders registered for a team and who selected the Gran Fondo Long Course in any race, may not earn points in a subsequent Medio Fondo Short Course (no down grading), but can return to Gran Fondo in subsequent events. However, a rider who starts in the Medio Fondo, may upgrade to the Gran Fondo and retain points eligibility. This rule is to stop riders changing between course distances dependent on their perceived strengths/weaknesses.

​

Event rules and limited liability: 

  1. Quality mass start road cycling challenge events for individuals, and social, corporate, and regular teams.

  2. Competitors, all volunteers and officials by starting and attending the event do so at their own risk (as per BikeNZ rules) and imply their acceptance of this condition and absolve the race organisation of liability.

  3. Numbers and timing tags are provided. Number to be worn on centre back or jersey pockets. Electronic timing tags must be returned at the end of each race or pay $20 penalty.

  4. All roads ride during the series are open. Riders must abide by NZ traffic and road rules, especially double yellow line rule. Ride on left side of the road at all times. Riders must take strict notice of road patrols, road works, marshal and traffic regulations. The Race Director reserves the right to disqualify any rider for breach of NZ Road Rules, dangerous or unsportsmanlike behaviour. Verbal abuse of other riders, volunteers, and supports will not be tolerated and may result in cancellation of any prize money owing or disqualification of the infringing rider at Race Director discretion. Any complaints should be logged to the Race Director.

  5. Riders repeatedly riding on wrong side of the road will be given a time penalty or slowest time for their grade and on 2nd offence – disqualification. This rule is not about occasional movement over the line due to movement in the peloton or a quick passing maneuver over the line. It is about attacks on the wrong side of the road, continually sitting over the line, and sitting over the line on blind corners or with oncoming traffic. Riders should form second and third echelons in cross winds.

  6. Disqualifications for riding over the white centre line. Complaints from the public and warnings from the Councils have meant we are enforcing the white line rule to secure continuation of traffic management approvals and public liability. An official warning will be provided (here) and at race briefing. You may or may not get a warning on the road. The white line is the gutter. Form a second echelon or counter attack. No exceptions. Moves onto the wrong side of the road, other than for safety followed by an immediate return to correct side of the road, will be subject to DQ. All motorbike, car and in-bunch marshals will be notified of rule enforcement.

  7. Event finishes will be indicated by a finishing line, chequered flag, timing equipment and road cones. There will be signs displayed at 2km, 1km, 500m to before the finish. Riders should take personal note of the mapped location of the course in case they miss a turn or otherwise (take course map if uncertain). Noted distances are approximate from mapmyride.com.

  8. Support vehicles. For safety reasons, no feeding from support vehicles is permitted. Feeding at designated safe feed zones defined by race organization only. Do not park on the course side within 1 km of the finish.

  9. Podium for top 3 overall man and women at the Event venue about 60 min after main group finishes.

  10. Following vehicles. Only official vehicles are permitted to follow, which may include volunteer additional team wheel wagon/feed support. Supporters, please use alternative routes where possible to access feed station, view points etc.

  11. In the case of a tie for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place at the end of the race, the rider with the highest first placings within the respective Competition wins the placing (not time on GC, not final event placing). If number of first placings are drawn, then second placings decide, and so forth until separation occurs.

  12. Cycling NZ Standard rules for bikes. Bikes must be road worthy, safe, and checked. It is the rider's responsibility to ensure they are riding a safe bike for their own and other riders' safety.

  13. Neutral Service: Wheel wagons will be available for all races. Mechanics will do their best to provide you with our own wheel, but this may not be guaranteed. Name and race number on cardboard in spokes please. You may or may not be drafted back up to the last bunch on the road depending on safety.

  14. An Ambulance crew will be on the course.
