Balfour Pennington Series - Race #1

Burnham Wharf - 2 August 2008

105 enthusiastic riders contested the 1st Balfour Pennington Series race on the course around Miramar Peninsula. Fortunately the rain stayed away until after the race and the riders weren't deterred by the familiar northwesterlies.

The route looked a bit like an obstacle course earlier in the day with the Council patching the road 500m from the start, debris on the road from the tree felling, new judder bars in Scorching Bay, roadworks after the Pass of Branda and pot holes in the airport tunnel (which led to a few punctures). A big thanks to the riders etiquette in the groups avoiding any major incidents and to the race marshalls:
Ed Banks, Glenn Owen, Lyn Allen, Gabrielle Bahler, Steve Pyne, Steve Scott, Tim Truebridge, Graeme Hawkins and Alan Rice for making it a safer race.

This was the first time the club relied on the electronic timing which made life much easier for the timekeepers and provided accurate results. A big thanks to Steve Chapman for setting this up. It was also the first time the series had an afternoon start which received positive feedback.

The club were pleased to welcome a large number of new club members and visitors to the race. And we hope to see them racing again.

Fastest time was was posted by Lee Evans using his track skills to win the sprint in the Scratch group. Fastest handicap time went to Paul Lundon in a hotly contested sprint with Richard Ainsworth both of whom started in Break 3. Fastest women was Keren van de Boom (in 48:40:40) who started in Break and fastest womens handicap time went to Sarah Barclay who started in Break 4.

PNP Members Tags

If you have a 2008 BikeNZ licence with PNP then there is a personalized timing tag ready for you to pick up.

At today's race a number of PNP members raced with visitor tags because their name was missing from the handicap list. The handicap list is based on last seasons handicaps with the addition of handicap requests recieved via email, it is not a full list of club members. Regardless of this list their personalized tag was there to pickup.
