The PNP Cycling Club is now into it's third year of running the Hawkins Hill Climb Challenge.  This is a 495m human elevation challenge that you can enter as a Runner, Road Rider or Mountain Biker.  The Challenge is to get from Owhiro Bay to the grey Airways Corp UHF building as quickly as you can, under human power. Note this is a different finish to the one used in previous events.

Start

Age group classes will be started separately, 1 minute apart, all modes together.  So at 10:00am Senior Men Roadies, Runners and Mountain Bikers will all take off together.  At 10:01am the next class will start, etc.  Smaller age group classes will be combined. Drafting is ok.

Sign-in

8:30am to 9:30am Happy Valley Park, Happy Valley Road. 1km up from Owhiro Bay.

Entry Fee

Entry fee is $10. This is a fundraising event with 50% of the entry fee going to the Makara Peak Supporters and 50% to PNP High Performance Fund.

Course

The start for everyone will be at Owhiro Bay, at the bottom end of Happy Valley Rd.

Road riders will ride up Happy Valley Rd, turn left at the Todman St traffic lights, climb past the Windmill and go on to the Hawkins Hill Radar Station.

Mountain bikers will ride 1km up Happy Valley Rd, turn left up the Tip Track, then right on the tarseal, and across to the Airways Corp UHF building.

Runners will run 1km up Happy Valley Rd, turn left up the Tip Track. Alternatively you may take the short-cut track up Bata Place if you wish. At the top of the Tip Track turn right on the tarseal, and across to the Airways Corp UHF building.

We will send a vehicle to the top, leaving at 10am from the start, which you can put your spare clothing/food/drink in.

Prize Giving

Will be held at about 11:30am at sign-in location, Happy Valley Park.
PNP will present a cheque to the Makara Peak Supporters Club for the total entry fees received.

Points System

Like previous years, the most important thing is the teams event between MTB, Roadies and Runners. The MTBs won it the last 2 years mainly by sheer weight of numbers, but this year with a slightly shorter trip for the Roadies and slightly less flattish stuff for the Runners it is all on!  All starters get points for their team.  The winning team gets bragging rights for the rest of the year.

The points system will allocate 50 points for each of the 11 class winners, then 40, 32, 26, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 then 5 for all starters, so you need to encourage your friends along on your favourite mode of transport.

CLASSES are Men Junior (Under 15), Men Junior (15 - 19), Men Senior (20 - 29), Men Master 1 (30 - 39), Men Master 2 (40 - 49), Men Master 3 (50+), Women Junior (Under 15), Women Junior (15 - 19), Women Senior (20 - 29), Women Master 1 (30 - 39), Women Master 2 (40+).

WARNING:  ALL ROADS/TRACKS ARE OPEN TO PUBLIC – KEEP LEFT AT ALL TIMES AND OBEY TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.
