Thanks to all those who filled out the Wellington Track Cycling Season Review survey. While there were less responders than last year, the answers provide us with useful insights into how we’re performing and what we can do to improve the programme.

Noticeably, the responders give a big thumbs up to the current time slots of racing on Sunday afternoons, with training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We will look at cost implications of adding more training sessions during the week.

The races we put on during Speed League meetings were on the whole popular, but we will introduce Keirins into the mix and a women’s Sprint Ace competition is to be added to the programme, with the aim of adding more women’s races as numbers grow.

The full survey answers can be viewed here. Question eight asked for suggestions on how to improve the programme, here are our answers to what was entered:

SUGGESTION: Winter league!!!
That would be nice, but unfortunately the track doesn’t dry properly over winter and is often wet and slimey on banking two. Not only that, it would be a bit chilly racing up there in winter (it’s bad enough in summer!), and the organisers need a bit of a break!

SUGGESTION: It would be good to see a separate women’s competition as there maybe a few women in B grade next season and if we ride with the Men of B grade we don’t always have a chance to win but if there is a way of tracking where the women place in the races each week then it may be more incentive for them to turn up each week and something to compete for. Even if we get maybe 6 women turning up most weeks we might be able to run a womens race series like having one or two 2 races in the weekly programme; for example, scratch race and a sprinters 2 lap scratch. The races could vary each week to make it a fair competition to suit all.
Certainly this is an area we want to improve on. We’re planning a seperate women’s Sprint Ace competition and, as per the 2012/13 season, an overall women’s prize. If numbers over the season develop, more seperate women’s races would definitely be a possibility. Tell all your friends!

SUGGESTION: Maybe finish the season a little earlier – just after the centre champs perhaps. Have the odd TT/pursuit/ sprint for anyone who needs the practice for National events.
Looking at the 2014 race calendar, the Elite National Championships are scheduled for end of March, so we have planned to finish the season at a similar place as last season to give the riders going to the Nationals the best possible lead in.

SUGGESTION: Get more riders involved in various tasks to save stress on committee.
That would be wonderful! We have plenty of tasks and jobs we’d like to offload and will put together some job descriptions and put the call out for help before the season begins.

SUGGESTION: We could have a weekend were we invite other centres and have serious racing mixed with fun races, so we can meet people and have godd competion. we could use entry fee money to go to resurfacing the track or new centre skinsuits.
Obviously we have the Laykold Cup in December which we will promote heavily with other centres but this is a nice idea, and may fit with some changes we have in mind for the Wellington Centre Championships. If we have more volunteers come forward who would like to help organise something like this, we would definitely be open to it.

SUGGESTION: I think the programme, in terms of the quality and variety of racing, works really well so my main suggestion/comment is to not ensure any changes are just around the edges and then only to either a) add a competitive edge/practice skills for our riders looking to make an impact at the national level b) add a level of entertainment or excitement for the spectators and racers.
Thanks, yes good suggestions. The coaches certainly try to train our riders with the Nationals as their key focus. Regarding entertainment, the first step will be to fix our PA system – if anyone out there is good with stereos or electronics, please get in touch!

SUGGESTION: Maybe have an open day/ trial session.
We put on two of these in October 2012 plus inducted a number of novices during training sessions. We’ll do one open day weekend for pre-registered interested riders this year and will do our best to get people trying the track as the season progresses.

SUGGESTION: I think it was fantastic this year – everything started and finished punctually, there was a chance for everyone to be involved, results were posted promptly.
Thanks!

To all members of PNP

Yet another cracker year for PNP, come celebrate with us and help design our future by making key decisions. Please lock in Saturday 11th May at 3:30pm for an important meeting comprising 3 parts.

1. AGM

2. Key decision section. See below, see AGM documents.

3. Prize giving – this will start at 5pm. We understand some will just want to attend this section so we make a commitment to keep as close as possible to this time.

Some background.

In the past the AGM has dragged on. Prize giving attendees get annoyed at delays. All sorts of questions and points get raised out of the blue, attendees do not have time to reflect or lack info to make decisions. Key decisions are not made or get rushed. Sound familiar?

So we want to run the 11th with some real precision and here is the plan…

Reports from the President etc will be on the website before the meeting and will not be read word for word. Please read before to save time.

This is a call for agenda items for part 2.

If you want a decision made then please send to president@pnp.org.nz by 26th April.

These should have a one line proposal with a couple of to-the-point sentences to back up your proposal.

You may like to send to the sub-committee convenor e.g. road@pnp.org.nz , mtb@pnp.org.nz or track@pnp.org.nz so that subcommittee can approve, this will have more weight.

These proposals will be published early with your name or subcommittee.

Any topics out of the blue will be moved to general business of part 2 at the end and it will only be discussed if we have time as we want to stay on track for the prize giving start. Anything missed will be moved to a normal monthly committee meeting.

Committee changes

The roles becoming vacant are:

President – a chance to grow and show a range of skills such as: leadership, mediation, communication plus how to get the best out of a group.

Secretary – Tasks Include:

Maintaining the Google site;

Maintaining distribution lists;

Organising meetings including pulling together agenda, putting papers on Google site,

recording minutes and actions;

Asset Register (Ensuring this remains accurate)

Road subcommittee – Dave Rowlands, Steve Chapman, Malcolm Allen and Chris Kendall are stepping down, we need some new faces to step up and help Deirdre Johnson and Chris Johnson drive the road program for the coming season.

The venue is the 5B14 room “Executive Seminar Suite” at Massey University. This in in the main tall block, WITH OUTSIDE DOOR ACCESS OFF CARPARK ENTRANCE A only on Saturday. Go in the main entrance “A” off Wallace Street. Or go in via Tasman street, entrance E or F, park and walk around Block 5.

There were many standout performances at the Age Group National Track Championships this year, but just getting the riders to the start line was only possible thanks to a small army of supporters. Here’s my way of looking at it:

30 seconds before race:
Hannah Latta – Hannah has wheeled my bike up to the start, given me a swig of water and last minute instructions before she walks down the straight to get ready to time my effort and give me race information.

15 minutes before race:
Barry Johnson – team mechanic Barry has given the bike a once over after putting the wheels and gearing on earlier. He’s got it checked by the commissaires and is preparing the spare wheels just in case. Handler Angus Swartz has handed me some water and pinned on my numbers.

2 hours before race:
Rowena Blakeley – super chef and camp mum, Rowena has fed me and the team lunch, cleaned my kit and got snacks ready for the night. They say an army marches on its stomach, Rowena made sure I could race on mine. This is in addition to the work Rowena did project managing the entire trip, organising the rental car, accommodation, applying to the Trusts for grants and giving me regular updates along the way.

5 days before race:
Peter Barnes – Peter drove the van with my track bike, spare wheels and kit from Wellington to Invercargill.. and back again once it was all over.

1 week before race:
Burkes Cycles – The good folk at Burkes lent Peter their van to get my stuff to Southland and back, this was a huge saving and a massive help.

2 weeks before race:
Pub Charity and Eastern Suburbs Sports Trust – thanks to these trusts support, Wellington was able to send its strongest team ever to the Age Group National Championships.

1 month before race:
Peter Moore – PNP’s track convenor handled the paperwork and general mucking around involved with my entry and made sure it was all sorted well in advance.

The past five years before race:
Gary Gibson – there wouldn’t be a junior track team if it wasn’t for Gary, period.

I think I can say this applies to all of the riders who raced this year at the National Track Championships. On behalf of us all, huge thanks to these people and to our families and friends for their amazing support – Nick Warren.

Connor Johnson secured his second Wellington Centre title of the year with a commanding display in the 10km Points Race held as part of the Burkes Cycles Speed League Round 14 at Hataitai on Sunday March 10.

Johnson was able to use his strong road cycling fitness to hit the front on sprint laps and hold off the bunch to pick up maximum points on numerous occasions. The 19-year-old finished ahead of Wheelworks team-mates Tristan Thomas and Mike Naylor to add to his Scratch Race title won in February.

Nick Warren was victor in the Masters points race ahead of Aaron Anderson and Grant Perry. Warren was one of four riders, including Anderson, who fell in a crash during the first race of the afternoon; the 10-lap Scratch. After getting patched up he bounced back to win the race after the restart, picking up more valuable Speed League points to all but secure the overall title with one points-scoring round to go in the season.

Renita Vanderhelm won a grueling 8km Womens Points Race Championship ahead of Penny Thomson and Ele Pepperell. The trio are closely packed together at the top of the women’s overall Speed League table and with Pepperell only six points ahead of Vanderhelm and Thomson a further five points back, the battle for the womens title will go down to the wire.

Louis Higgison moved himself into contention for the Sprint Ace trophy, blitzing the A Grade 2-lap Sprinters Scratch, thereby qualifying for a one on one match sprint against Ian Ellis. Ellis led the sprint out, and had a two-length lead over Higgison with less than 200m to go. The under-17 rider’s rapid finish was too much for his older opponent however, and Higgison stormed over the top for the win. He now stands just three points behind Sprint Ace leader Jon Barnes.

Jordan Lewis won his first races of the season, winning the C Grade 6-lap Scratch and also picked up the Sprinters’ Scratch with a convincing sprint ahead of Martine Barnes. Barnes also picked up a second place in the Junior Riders 15-lap Handicap behind Higgison, and has an unassailable lead in the under 15s overall Speed League competition.

Zac Blakely made another attempt to overhaul season leader Lee Evans in the Lemond Fitness Power Play, where the goal is to set the highest power to weight ratio on a static home trainer. Blakely recorded 17.2 Watts/Kg, identical to the mark he set last month and still just 0.1Watts/Kg behind Evans.

There are two Burkes Cycles Speed League events to go before the season close, with March 17 the last opportunity to score points. On March 24, racing will be followed by a prize giving ceremony and celebration of a successful season.

The lead in the women’s competition at the Burkes Cycles Speed League has changed hands yet again, as Eleanor Pepperell becomes the latest rider to pull on the Champion System leaders’ jersey.

Pepperell won three races, giving her a total of 123 points to jump ahead of Renita Vanderhelm who has 118 points and Penny Thomson with 112. There are just two more opportunities for points-earning and with it so tight at the top, the title could go to any of those three.

In the Lemond Fitness Power Play, Pepperell improved her standing moving up to sixth on the table after recording a 14.7 Watts per Kilogram reading.

Fresh from competing at the National Championships, Jon Barnes entered the fray on a borrowed bike to snatch second place in the Sprinters Scratch which qualified him for a match sprint for Sprint Ace points with Connor Johnson. After a tense two laps of cat and mouse tactics, Johnson powered away for a decisive win. However, Barnes earned another point to bolster his lead in the overall competition.

Local outfit Wheelworks sent their squad of elite roadies to the track, who lit up the A category competition. The team of Tristan Thomas, Michael Naylor and Johnson were joined by returning legend Aaron Anderson to make this round’s Team Scratch one of the most intense on record. Wheelworks secured the win ahead of the Green Team.

Next week features the Senior Wellington Points Race Championship and with many riders returning from a successful campaign at the National Championships in Invercargill, the racing will be full on.
